Early Black Friday Specials and a Thanksgiving throwback!

We're starting Black Friday Sales today! In addition to "buy one, get one" special on candles, Sissys Jewelry is having their very first sale. WOWZA! I'll have to look at that myself!  Their pieces have gained quite a following with their stylish curated selection.
We are also offering our fantastic selection of antique and
vintage mirrors (some pictured below) at

We have been decorating for Christmas and have been collecting holiday gifts that are exclusive, sourced from my travels around the world.  We are really excited to show you the collection and hope you will stop by when you want to give gifts carefully chosen with you in mind.

This is a throwback post from our Thanksgiving a few years ago that I thought may give you a laugh.

A silly Thanksgiving!!

facebook logo
This was such a silly day.  About a month ago my niece Jordan sent around an email in the family  mentioning her desire to have us all dress as Pilgrims and Indians for Thanksgiving.  No, Jordan is not the 10 year old Indian behind the front  row turkey, she is a 21 year old college student.  Everyone jumped on board in their own way as is typical with the whole group.

Holidays were a big deal when I was a child.  My mother would go all out with decorations, costumes and meals.  On Halloween she, my Grandfather and Grandmother would put their heads together and create, hammer and sew costumes worthy of a Broadway show for us.  I still remember the costume parties they had.
Our home at Christmastime had theme outdoor decorations and not the store bought kind, tasteful engineering feats dreamed up by my Mother and executed by my Grandfather.
I don't know how she did it, really  even our  meals were sumptuous banquets.

Each summer when my Grandparents took their cross Atlantic cruise with trunks packed full of spectacular gowns my Grandmother was always proud to report they took first prize at the masquerade ball with her creations.  The desire to have fun and not take ourselves too seriously has made its way through the generations.  A few years ago we started having a progressive Thanksgiving feast where we walk from house to house for each course as my 3 sisters and I all live in the same small town.  The men orchestrate the frying of the bird and make it an event outside with cigars, bourbon or a nice scotch. Sometimes we set up a target outside and everyone takes a turn shooting bows and arrows.

My eldest son showed up from the city in a turkey costume....he made me so proud!! I always pride myself in not spending a cent...(maybe it shows but it's the spirit that counts)

My husband (manning the fryer) grabbed a headband but he lost his feather very early.... my brother-in-law Tom was HYSTERICAL as a pilgrim and I took 20 pictures of him because I kept cracking up every time I looked at him.

Hilary made her turkey costume and glued every feather. (my nieces are sooo creative!) My mother said she will wear a red bow at Christmas and carry a bell and go as a Salvation Army volunteer!! LOL!!!

My Dad always brings the cigars.  That is my son without his turkey costume.

My sister Danielle with her brood posing.  I thought it was so cute that even though his brother and sister were weapon bearing Indians Nicky wanted to be a "fat turkey"!

Lots of super sale items and holiday center pieces!

He's hysterical!! Our Thanksgiving tablescape event was such fun last night as Matt Allegretta, design coordinator from Anthropologie, created several Thanksgiving interpretations.

Here we are getting warmed up. Lauren made polenta with sautéed wild mushrooms. Deelish!

Best staff around, hands down! Love these talented ladies. This Thanksgiving and everyday I am very grateful to Abigail, Susan, Suzanne, Lauren and, not pictured Michelle and Matt. They make everyday easy and fun and a store that feels like home! XOXOXO

Our blue cheese with pecans on endive contrasted beautifully with our black marble cheeseboard (available $54.00)

Our vintage wine barrel cover cheeseboards are the perfect start when we are putting together a delicious spread. We have 3 available and currently on sale, both lazy Susan and stationary.

Matt showed us how to put together our own beautiful centerpiece and explained the method behind the art.

Even though there were cancellations due to the rain, we had a great eager turnout.

A beautiful contrast of earthiness and shine. Our linen napkins and pewter napkin rings blend seamlessly. You can see the little mushroom Matt whipped together inside the cloche and on the moss. I clicked this picture after he had removed a couple climbing up the moss. A woodland scene that was my fav!
He explained that he chose the vintage glassware because, although silver and shiny, the leaves decorating the glass kept with the theme....magical!  The mushrooms were made with model magic and green covered wire. Moss, pinecones, model magic and wire all found at any craft store.

Our antique pieces mounted on stands added the vertical height Matt spoke of.

The demo turned into a do it yourself!

Carolyn's were beautiful !

I was touched several talented local businesswomen attended. Shown from left to right, Maura Buckley, designer from MillburnETC, Denise Schoenfeld, Sissys Jewelry, Leslie Hyans Depalma, designer Oakleigh Interiors, me, Heather Cundey, editor of The Scout Guide Northern New Jersey, Allison Lees, realtor Lois Schneider Realty. So happy to promote local businesses and, don't forget Small Business Saturday is coming up the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I made these decadent pumpkin cheesecake crumble bars for the event too! Heavenly!  I was alone with the leftovers this morning and was glad I had to go to work. (I have a problem....can't eat one, have to eat 5!
Get the recipe here: Pumpkin cheesecake crumble squares

I have done this a couple of times and is super easy. We have available hand blown glass vessels, fill with stones, water and a bunch of leeks from the super market. After Thanksgiving make vichyssoise :) !!

My granddaughter Madison and I will be doing this easy craft again this year.

Your Thanksgiving table and an invite!

It's harvest time and we're thinking about Thanksgiving at GreatHouse!  I've put together personal pictures we have of foods and flowers placed in unique antique pieces that will make your Thanksgiving table the talk of the day! Think out of the box and even though the menu hardly changes, the serving pieces can create a fresh take on the turkey feast and create the warmth we all want this time of year.

Vegetable crudité served in an antique enamel bread bin..

My sister's antipasto looked irresistible on an antique breadboard.

The contrast of wood with the food is so earthy.

The moose antler on the left held the crackers and was a definite conversation piece next to our raised antique cheeseboard.

We love to just pile on the pickings, not having everything so symmetrical.

This metal egg catcher is a great serving piece with the fine linen napkin.

Antique punch bowl doubles as a serving bowl.

Avant garde use for salad or used as a serving tray for the turkey.

We love the meat on our leaf tray.

This bread basket is actually a bin from a general store scale.

Jaime from Parker's Petals loaded up our porcelain planter to make this centerpiece burst with color!

She also used our antique wooden dough bowls to create this stunner!

We have one zinc grape gathering basket that is shown here loaded with sunflowers....a great display in your entry.

Please stop by GreatHouse to create a Thanksgiving table you will never forget.

If you follow me on Instagram you may know I asked my talented sister, Nicole, to enter our local apple pie baking contest for GreatHouse. I am fortunate enough to have such a supportive family and, even though she is the busiest person, she didn't hesitate to say "sure"!  Her award winning pie (of course) is pictured below, with buttery, flaky leaf cutouts it tastes as good as it looks. She is known in our family as making the best pie crusts. She kindly shared the recipe....let me know if you bake it and how it comes out.

Just back from Manhattan after getting Rockefeller Center's store decked for the holidays, Anthropologie design coordinator, Matt Allegretta, is joining us once again. He will be in house on Thursday, November 19th at 6:30, to share his Thanksgiving tablescape creativity and charm with lucky GreatHouse enthusiasts.  Join us for cocktails, light bites and prizes. Limited attendance, email me or call during store hours to register. 908-522-8900. A GreatHouse opportunity! See what Matts's been up to by following him on Instagram @mattyallegretts
